Band structure effects for dripped neutrons in neutron star crust

چکیده

The outer layers of a neutron star are supposed to be formed of a solid Coulomb lattice of neutron rich nuclei. At densities above neutron drip density (about one thousandth of nuclear saturation density), this lattice is immersed in a neutron fluid. Bragg scattering of those dripped neutrons by the nuclei which has been usually neglected is investigated, within a simple mean field model with Bloch type boundary conditions. The main purpose of this work is to provide some estimates for the entrainment coefficients, as required for hydrodynamical two fluid simulations of neutron star crust [1, 2], which relate the momentum of one fluid to the particle currents of the other two fluids [3]. The implications for the equilibrium neutron star crust structure are also briefly discussed.

Effective mass of free neutrons in neutron star crust

The inner layers of a neutron star crust, composed of a Coulomb lattice of neutron rich nuclear clusters immersed in a sea of “free” superfluid neutrons, are closely analogous to periodic condensed matter systems such as electronic, photonic or phononic crystals. Applying methods from solid state physics to the neutron star context, we study the transport properties of those “free” neutrons for...

Superfluid Density of Neutrons in the Inner Crust of Neutron Stars: New Life for Pulsar Glitch Models.

Calculations of the effects of band structure on the neutron superfluid density in the crust of neutron stars made under the assumption that the effects of pairing are small [N. Chamel, Phys. Rev. C 85, 035801 (2012)PRVCAN0556-2813] lead to moments of inertia of superfluid neutrons so small that the crust alone is insufficient to account for the magnitude of neutron star glitches. Inspired by e...

The crust of neutron stars

The structure of the crust of a neutron star is completely determined by the experimentally measured nuclear masses up to a density of the order of 1011 g.cm−3. At higher densities, the composition of the crust still remains uncertain, mainly due to the presence of “free” superfluid neutrons which affect the properties of the nuclear “clusters”. After briefly reviewing calculations of the equil...

Neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung by electrons in neutron star crusts

Neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung by relativistic degenerate electrons in a neutron-star crust at densities 109 g cm −3 <∼ ρ <∼ 1.5 × 1014 g cm−3 is analyzed. The processes taken into account are neutrino emission due to Coulomb scattering of electrons by atomic nuclei in a Coulomb liquid, and electronphonon scattering (the phonon contribution) and Bragg diffraction (the static-lattice contribution)...

Neutron Star Crust beyond the Wigner-seitz Approximation

For more than three decades, the inner crust of neutron stars, formed of a solid lattice of nuclear clusters coexisting with a gas of electrons and neutrons, has been traditionally studied in the Wigner-Seitz approximation. The validity of this approximation is discussed in the general framework of the band theory of solids, which has been recently applied to the nuclear context. Using this nov...
